Women Sports Reporters

One thing I've observed recently in commentators and reporters in sports. I remember growing up, and people seemed like they actually knew what they were talking about. I hate to say, but as I woman, I feel that I can without being controversial; but, women commentators especially seem that they are only on the field reporting because they are pretty and can read from a telleprompter. What happened to people standing out there discussing things that they actually know about. I mainly observe this in football, however I have seen similar instances in baseball, basketball, and hockey.

As someone who originally began school to be a sports reporter, this discourages me in a way from ever wanting to be in that field. I do not want to be looked at in the same way I see these other women. I continue to wonder if they ever received proper education, or grew up around the sport they commentate on? Do other's notice this issue? If so, what do you feel could be improved upon, and do you think this will ever change and get better?

  1. I too have noticed this issue. At first, I was going to write my paper about women broadcasters and how much it has evolved over the years, however after seeing all the negative write ups I decided to change. I do say that I have to agree with what you are saying about how the women are not as knowledgeable about the sport as commentators used to be. When it comes to the sporting world I would like to know some of the research on the motives of having women broadcasters. Is it because of their looks and beauty or is it that they really do know the sport and know the game? I say do not let this stereotype discourage you from wanting to get into being a sport reporter. There are so many stereotypes throughout the world and it is nice to see people go against stereotypes and prove them wrong. So I say if it is really something you want to achieve keep at it.

  2. have noticed this issue as well, but I do believe these ladies are very knowledgeable about sports. Women sometimes don’t have that natural ability to discuss and communicate sport discussion like majority of men do, and are quick to be judged or critiqued because its a female covering sports. If a male made a mistake, I bet prospectors would one, not even notice or two, think it was just a mistake, in the sense that he didn’t really mean that. Although, I believe the female sports casters are knowledgeable I also believe that the better looking you are, the easier and more likely you can excel in the industry. I’m not sure what’s worse, men saying they would rather watch women broadcasting because of their looks or men that automatically stereotype women broadcasters as not knowledgeable about the sport
