Stephen A. Smith

Stephen A. Smith of ESPN was lambasted recently for saying the 'N' word on live television.  He said it referring to a player and it was clear what he said.  However, he completely denies saying it despite the fact that it is recorded.  Friends of his proceeded to go on radio shows and while they didn't defend him they did mention how easy it is to fall into the trap of saying the word.  A lot of people are calling for Smith to be fired but from an objective standpoint I don't agree.  In watching the sequence it is obvious that he was emotional and in the moment so while it definitely doesn't excuse what he said I don't think he deserves to be let go.  I do believe he should be reprimanded and actually admit to saying what he said followed by an apology.  It is concerning, though, that so many people use the word as part of their everyday verbiage.  If the company does not do anything in terms of discipline, it could lead to others, especially youths, to feel empowered in using the word.
