Early today it was announced that the 23rd New York City Marathon would be canceled in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. I for one agree with this decision. As much as I would like to believe it would have brought the city and the nation together I think it would have done more harm than good. In the days coming to this decision there was much controversy and debate that was beginning to divide New York City and that is the last thing you want to happen after such a diaster. Any event that would that police and other first responders away from helping those in needs just would not be ideal. With already 40 people know dead and countless others still without water, power and other necessities this is a time where sport is put second and rightfully so.

I agree with you. In situations of natural disasters its better to put sport second and recovery first. As American's we like to use sport as our escape goat, but when damage is all around you there is no place to escape. Perhaps changing from sport as an escape to sport as a reward would be more beneficial to bring people together and on the way to recovery.
