What’s your fantasy?

As we are now underway in a new year of professional football and basketball many of us are involved in fantasy sports leagues with friends and co-workers. I can’t seem to remember when and why these  leagues started to matter so much. Instead of watching and enjoying a game for what is we have become a society consumed with the stats and percentages individual players put up. Some would argue that we devalue the game and highlight the weekly accolades of certain players more than the game itself. I assume we just want to win and get bragging rights or if we are really good win some prize that ESPN, Yahoo or whomever else hosts these leagues. The question I want to pose is what is so different about playing in a fantasy sports league compared to someone playing hours upon hours of world of warcraft?  Neither is better than the other I suppose but at the end of the day it’s all make believe so what is the fantasy you are trying to fulfill?

  1. As someone who loves playing fantasy football, I can honestly say that I 100% agree with you. I am not one who takes it super seriously, it's just some fun to have with friends. However, after watching a day full of football today with a bunch of friends who are hardcore fantasy players, I see your point exactly. It's almost as if their teams run their lives and what their friendships revolve around. It reminded me of the tv show "The League." I think things have been taken to a whole new level in the world of fantasy football, especially from where it started.
