Media say 'sex sells everything', so we try using sex to sell everything. It works for clothes and men's sports such as David Beckham posing for underwear ads pulling in more fans and shoppers, so why doesn't the sex sells motto work for women's sports? Take Serena Williams posing in a sexy outfit, this picture does not attract me to watch women's tennis and many of my female friends agree. To us it's kinda degrading to see a female pose in a sexy manner, as if she an object of lust not an athlete. We rather see an action shot of a female player showing off her athletic abilities. The media attempts to sell women's sports using a tactic to attract a young male audience, rather than attract a young female audience. A young female audience would be more appropriate for women's sports to give females role models as young males have with professional male athletes. Women's sports has potential to bring in revenues like men's sports if the media portrayed women and sport in a different light. The media has a strong influence on our society's perception, we see this every election year, depending on what news channel you watch will depend on how you vote. With that said, future sport industry people should research ways to promote women's sport with the help of the media and change perceptions of women in sport.
