Too much to risk

After watching the film "Training Rules" I researched other pieces on homosexuality in sports and found this interest series by BBC:

While watching this series I realized that the reason why we do not hear about homosexual athletes is not because they don't exist, it is because they have too many things to risk if they come out.
Studies show that 1.5-3% of American population is homosexual. This means that for every 85-men football team there is a good chance that one of them might be gay. So the question remains: Why is it that we don't hear about gay men and lesbians in professional sports?
Well, homosexual professional athletes simply feel they have too much at stake to risk losing: First of all they are afraid of losing their job if they come out because their clubs/teams can make up any excuse to release them. They pretty much own them. Second, players in team sports feel they would risk being harassed by teammates that are not ok with homosexuality. and Lastly I think that professionals athletes are public figures that at some point become role-models to their fans and the community, and if they were to come out about their sexuality they might be judged and harassed by the community and the media.
Homosexuality can be hidden and I know that many athletes do just that in order to protect their best interest and I don't blame them.
