The Beckham Experiment

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/nov/15/sports/la-sp-david-beckham-mls-20111116

David Beckham signed a $250,000,000 contract for a five year deal to be the ultra, super, mega star; the best player in Major League Soccer. That’s a lot of zeroes. Apparently the contract never worked out to its full potential but he was still the highest paid soccer player at $32.5 million for this season. Was it worth it? I am undecided. Beckham should have been more of an ambassador for American soccer, using the full potential of the media. He never embraced the power of his stardom. After moving to Los Angeles, I haven’t heard much of the Galaxy. As a fan of the MLS, I would have to search out scores and news. The MLS has attracted bigger name stars like Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane and Rafael Marquez. But did they come to the MLS because Beckham gave the league some relevance? Or did they follow the money? The Galaxy have had great success, but no championship in his tenure. Ticket sales and media rights have brought in more revenue but arguably it’s not solely due to Beckham, the team is always in the running for the championship. Time will tell, when he is gone we can look back and decide his MLS tenure.
