Its Not Just In Football People

With all the hype about the PSU Scandal, one would think that this is the first time anything like this has every happened in sports. But lets face it, it happens all the time, and in every sport. Sexual abuse and molestation between coaches and athletes is something that has been going on forever, and it seems like organizations and those in power have always been able to sweep it under the rug so to say, until now. The PSU Scandal victims and their families have all my sympathy, and what happened to those children should never had happened. However, I am glad that this situation happened within football.

The video and article attached is about USA Swimming coaches molesting and secretly taping dozens of swimmers in locker rooms. The issue attracted press and was even covered on ABC’s 60 minutes, but how many of us tweeted about it? I’m going to go out on a limb here and say zero. Maybe now that this type of behavior has been exposed in such a popular sport, people will start realizing that sport is not immune to the rest of societies deviances. The USA Swimming organization banned those guilty and quickly began implementing new rules and regulations for coaches background checks. I can only hope that football organizations will do the same. Child molestation stories keep appearing in sport after sport, and as sport management graduate students we need to start thinking of ways to prevent these horrific acts from occurring.
