The most recent issue of Sports Illustrated is entitled “The Failure and Shame of Penn State”, which features a 14 page discussion of the scandal. The scandal at Penn State has been the highlight of sports news for a few weeks now. Not long before that, it was Ohio State. I could continue to list a number of scandals that have been breaking stories over the year, but let us not dwell on the dark past. It is unfortunate that these scandals exist in sport, but we must also remember the good times.
Within the 85 page issue of Sports Illustrated, is entrenched a half page article, which is trying to promote a more positive side of sports. The article discusses a new television series that Sports Illustrated is putting together with HBO. The series titled Sport in America: Our Defining Stories will feature fans and celebrities alike. It gives the Average Joe a chance to voice his opinion on the greatest rivalry, the most memorable catch, the best athlete, and more. I believe this is a great way to remember the thrill and excitement that sport brings instead of the scandals and corruption that have been overshadowing the positive stories which should be the headline. This also shows how the media treats those who are considered deviant. Athletes and coaches are in the spotlight, anything they do that is contrary to societal values or norms will be exploited by the media.
