As we were all discussing yesterday during class about LGBT the Brittney Griner controversy was brought up. I just read a "Times" magazine article on what happened when Brittney was asked to keep quiet. Brittney came out and let every body know that she was a lesbian when she was a freshman in high school. The coaches at Baylor asked her to keep it quiet for recruiting reasons when she came to Baylor. The coaches said that if the idea that they condoned it that lots of recruits would not come to Baylor. They told Brittney that it was personal business and didn't need to be released to the public.
The article also goes on to discuss other universities that had different policies on the issue of LGBT athletes at their school. The article talks about former Penn State head coach Rene Portland who once said, “I will not have [lesbians] in my program.” She was later forced to resign due to a lawsuit. The article also talks about an ESPN the Magazine story on homophobia in women's basketball recruiting. The article said that 55% of recruits said that sexual orientation was an issue of conversation when being recruited. The Times article also talks about a the very end about the "Griner Effect" and how it could do great thing for LGBT athelets to come out because of what a big star she was in college and will be in the WNBA.
