Yahoo! Sports columnist, Dan
Wetzel published an article today on the coming changes to online gambling
in the United States and how that could impact sports. The article notes the
recent push to legalize online poker and other forms of Internet gambling in
several states across the country. Accompanying this push it is expected that
many states will push to legalize online gambling for sporting events.
There are varying opinions on both sides of the issue, but
the interesting point Wetzel highlights is how this push may impact how fans
consume sports. Does it change the game or culture if fans are able to place
bets on sporting events from the comfort of their home or while seated at
Dodger Stadium or Cowboys Stadium?
Gambling is big business and some tout the benefits it could
bring in jobs and taxes. But, what is the impact on culture and specifically
the sport culture if the ease and participation in gambling increases? Are
high-stake, million dollar bets good for sport? What implications does this
have on athletes, coaches and the integrity of the game? These are interesting
points to consider, as it seems likely that online gambling for sports may be a
reality.

interview Dan Wetzel did on the Dan Patrick Show.
