The article by Buzz Bissinger brings
about in argument that no one directly stated while we were having our class
debate on whether college athletes should get paid: that college football
should be banned from college campuses. College football, in many cases, is the
primary driver of revenue at these universities across America.
The issue of rising student fees in the
countrywide recession is a huge topic for concern and it is unfair that schools
often times cut spending on other areas of the university in order to make room
for athletic programs. I definitely agree with Mr. Bissinger that the purpose
of college is to “prepare students for the rigors of the new economic order.”
With the way world economy is currently, the focus of university’s should be on
having their students get the best academic experience possible. In order to do
this successfully, colleges need to have the funds necessary and spending
lavishly on college football programs does not help the case.
I love college football, as do tons of
people throughout the country. Bissinger’s suggestion of a minor league
football system is something to note, and would perhaps create an even better
NFL product for viewers.
